Welcome to East Farleigh
CLICK FOR 2021 CENSUS DATAIntroduction
East Farleigh is based on the south side of the River Medway and its crossing has a fascinating history. The tide of the River Medway, which flows beneath the East Farleigh bridge, once rose as high as the bridge itself, before the locks were built in the 1700s to promote navigation of the river. The bridge is an ancient monument with a Grade I listed status, and has been referred to as the “finest bridge in Southern England and a perfect example of medieval design and craftsmanship” in the book Ancient Bridges of the South of England. East Farleigh has been mentioned in the Domesday Book under the name Ferlaga, which means the way of the passage, it is a referral to the river crossings at both East and West Farleigh.
